Descendants of Jacobs family in Faversham

Postby bjvinten » Fri Jun 18, 2010 3:49 pm

My maternal grandfather was Frank Jacobs, born 1892 in Riverhead, Sevenoaks, Kent. He died in 1919 as a result of wounds he sustained in World War 1. His widow, Ivy Jacobs, nee Clark, remarried in 1924 and did not keep in contact with the Jacobs family so I have no knowledge of them.
In the 1901 census, the Jacobs family lived at 1 Ospringe Road, Faversham, Kent and consisted of:
George (Head) aged 40, Amelia (Wife) 32, Ernest (Son) 11, Frederick (Son) 10, Frank (Son) 9, George (Son) 2, Thomas (Son) 6 months, Georgina (Daughter) 12, Elsie (Daughter) 6, Florence (Daughter) 4.
Some of the children were recorded by nicknames, e.g. Frank was Franky and Frederick was Freddy, and some names, and one age, have been transcribed completely incorrectly by Ancestry.
There is no certificated evidence that George and Amelia were ever married.
Are there any descendants of Frank's siblings reading this? If so, please post a reply. Also does anybody know if George and Amelia were married?

Have you looked for a marriage only by the George Jacobs route? Have you obtained a birth certificate for any of the children to see if it gives a maiden name for Amelia? It may be that George was missed off the GRO, but possibly Amelia is there if you know a maiden name. Even if they weren't married they weren't the only ones!

I found the family on the 1891 census too - I assume you've seen that? If not I can provide details.

He is also on the 1881 census with a wife Rose and a child Lizzie. Have you followed this family through to see if Rose died?

Yes, I have Amelia's maiden name; it was Wyles or Wiles, and I have viewed the 1891 census.
By 1911, Amelia was married to a George Appleton and she had had several other children, all surnamed Jacobs. I did meet her once, around 1950, when she was living in Sittingbourne, where she died in 1952.

A further reply to Tilliduff:
No, I have not looked into George Jacobs' relationship with Rose and child Lizzie but will now do so to see if they are the right Jacobs.
The family does get a bit confusing as the surname was recorded as Jacob in some earlier documents.

I've been unable to find a marriage for George and Rose. I've now looked under Jacob as well without success.

There is an Amelia Jane Wyles marrying in Dec qtr 1882 in Faversham, but no George. It makes me wonder if they both had previous marriages and came together when marriages broke down - ordinary people could not divorce in those days as it was far too expensive, and it was not uncommon for people to do that.

My daughter has found out more about George Richard Jacob than I have and the information she has indicates that his first partner was Rosina H Jacob (nee Shepherd), born 1860, so that fits with Rose in the 1881 census, but there is no evidence that they ever married. They had several children, the eldest being Elizabeth, b.1880, so that fits with the 1881 census which names her Lizzie, aged 1. The other children were Emily Patience b.1881 d.1883, Bertha Patience b.1883 d.1884, Caroline Daisy b.1884, George Richard b.1885, John Edward Victor b.1887, all surnamed Jacob but I have no other information about them or what happened to Rosina/Rose.
A bit more background:
George Richard Jacob was born 7th March 1861, died (recorded as Jacobs) 25th October 1927. Father: William Brignall Jacob, Mother: Amy (nee Boorman).
Amelia was Amelia Ann (not Jane) Wyles, born 19th April 1868, died (surnamed Appleton) 12th August 1952. Father: William Wyles, Mother: Mary Ann Town.
