Regiment query (Tournay Barracks)

Postby MoVidger » Fri Mar 12, 2010 2:09 pm

I'm trying to confirm which infantry regiment my great-uncle served with at the turn of the century. I've located him on the 1901 UK census (age 17) based at Tournay Barracks in Aldershot.

Can anyone advise which regiments were based at Tournay Barracks in 1901? He was a local lad (born in Aldershot) and so I'm not sure if that would have had any bearing on the regiment he joined.

Many thanks for any assistance!

Hi Maureen,
This is from Google:
Tournay Barracks
Date of construction 1890-5
Date of demolition 1971

Named after one of the battles in the French Revolutionary Wars. The Battle of Tournay was fought in May 1794.

These brick barracks were designed to replace the old wooden hutted encampment of the 1850s, following the Barracks Act of 1890. Tournay Barracks was built to accommodate a battalion of infantry.

Demolished in 1971. The site is now occupied by New Normandy Barracks. The Victorian Officer's Mess survives and is used by the Defence Dental Agency.

I can't find any detail regarding regiments on Google, maybe one of the military experts on the forum may know.
