Pennethorne-Parker Marriage

Postby stephhobbs » Sun Mar 07, 2010 8:40 am

I am asking for help on this subject, i have been trying to research this for about a year on-off.

James Pennethorne married Frances 'Fanny' Parker. I have NO dates, no PLACE of marriage, nothing. I know that there was a Son born in 1835, so must have been married before then. I do not know if that was the first surviving child born to them.

James spent alot of time in Italy and France after 1824, so may have been abroad when they married. Frances was born in 1806 Canterbury UK and James born in 1801 Worcester. I have researced on Ancestry and Find my past, family search, to no avail. Any information would be greatly received

Many Thanks

Steph

Hi Steph,
I hope this is at least some of the info you are searching for. This was gleaned from Ancestry.co.uk and just a small piece of what is available. I am not surprised you struggled as the surname is incorrect in all transcriptions.
I couldn't find any of the children born outside of England. Neither could I find James and Frances (Fanny) marriage.
1851 census James Pennethouse, Elms Court, St. Pancras, Architect.
1861 census James Pennethome, same address
1871 census Ain (Sir) James Sennethorne, Worcester Park House, Long Ditton.
I hope this is of some help to you.

Hi again,
I forgot there are two recorded Deaths also on ancestry, Frances Pennethorne, Dec qtr 1866, Kingston, Vol 2a Page 154 and James Pennethorne Sept qtr 1871, Kingston Vol 2a Page 159.
If the marriage took place in France, it could be a problem unless you can find the registration district. The Maire takes care of the records and they are not centralised until 100 years has passed.

I hate to burst your bubble, but is it possible that James and Frances did not get married at all? Or that they married after the birth of their first child? Contrary to popular belief, it was very common for couples to live together before marriage, particularly if they were engaged, as it was possible to sue for breach of promise if the marriage did not subsequently take place. It may be worth looking for a marriage later than you originally thought in case they married later than you expected.

There are copies of the following marriage records on Ancestry.co.uk:-

Lee Percy Pennethorne, son of James (architect), to Mary Elizabeth Wainwright, in 1869.

Frank James Pennethorne, son of Sir James, to Amy Margaret MacGregor, in 1874.

The witnesses may help shed some light on things, plus, if you haven't already got copies, you can add them to your records.

They also suggest that James received his knighthood between 1869 and 1874.

Have you seen the following link:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Pennethorne

Not that Wikipedia is always right! However, interestingly, Sir James Pennethorne was involved in building the Public Records Office in Chancery Lane and the west wing of Somerset House - both places of interest to family historians.

Even more inerestingly, there was a rumour that James Pennethorne and his siblings may have been the illegitimate children of the Prince Regent and John Nash's second wife, Mary Anne Bradley.....

Mind you, can we always trust what we read on the internet?

If this is the case, is it possible that James Pennethorne got married in a secret ceremony, like Boris Johnston's Royal ancestor?

Have you been able to find the marriage records of James's siblings? It may be worth working sideways to see what you can find out.

This book is available, however is very expensive:-

Sir James Pennethorne and the Making of Victorian London (Cambridge Studies in the History of Architecture)

It may be possible to borrow it from a library.

Thanks K Southall

Yeah have all that info.... got some of the certificates. They are putting the prices up in April, so trying to get a few more.

Knew about the regency bit...not sure if true, but something fishy that my Gran would never EVER talk about about him, who know. But we have his father down as Thomas Pennethorne

Thanks :)

It makes the story more exciting though, doesn't it? Although, a famous architect is exciting enough anyway - compared to my uneventful background.

Yep - I am also sorting out which certificates to get in before April 5th.
