Bishops Hall Estate - Thorpe Town Estate

Postby Winneba » Thu Mar 04, 2010 7:08 pm

Can anyone please help?
I have been trying for a very long time to trace the whereabouts of the "Bishops Hall Estate" and the "Thorpe Town Estate". They were clearly known by these names !900-1905 as I have a will which refers to the purchase of plots of freehold land being purchased there during that period. Unfortunately the deceased forgot to put a specific address. I assume that they may be somewhere in East London as this was where he lived.
The only ref I have found to the " Bishops Hall Estate" is in connection with an extension to the Regents Canal but that was for a much earlier period.
Somebody must know something about these areas as I can't believe they were an invention and the other details in the will are traceable. Thank you in anticipation.

I have found a few refernces to Bishop's Hall Estate

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/ ... 5/page.pdf

mentions it - but its from 1931 - I'm not sure how far thsi would be from your search area as it is Essex

and

http://www.qub.ac.uk/directorates/Infor ... nuscripts/

is a ref to the rental of the estate (under Newport manuscripts) - but I think this is earlier than you want.

there is also a couple of refereces in this online book - about the estate being split up in around 1911. - pages 107, 109 and 278 from the search.

hope these help

Shezzy

Thanks for the suggestions Shezzy. The Newport Manuscripts are for Sir John Newport who was an Irish MP but could have had property in London. As they are with Queens Uni I could try contacting them to see if they know where particular Bishops Hall Estate is located.

I looked at the pages of the Vic County History but couldn,t find any ref (perhaps I wasn’t using the system properly)
The London Gazette ref didn’t help.
There is a housing estate called the Bishops Hall estate in Brentwood Essex but that was built much later also.

Thanks for trying to help.
