Austrian Research / Genealogy Sites

Postby steve bannister 1 » Mon Feb 08, 2010 1:25 pm

Does anyone know if there are any good Austrian sites for for Family History research?

The few that I have found are all in German, which makes finding the right information almost impossible. I'm after something like, FreeBMD, Genes Reunited or Family Search for Austria. My Paternal Grandmother, Ludmilla Galler, was born in Sankt Peter am Kammersberg, Austria in 1914, but moved to England in 1936.

Does anyone know of an English language site that would be helpful in finding her birth details and then her ancesters? Cyndi's List hasn't proved very helpful.

Familysearch.org has drawn a blank for me, which is unusual. There are quite a few 'Galler's', but no Ludmilla Galler's. The problem is that there was no civil registation until 1938, so it's parish records or nothing.

If Sarah or Matt are reading, has WDYTYA magazine ever done an article on Austria? If so, would you have published any links?

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Steve
The Family History Library Catalog is not particularly helpful. I got as far as discovering that Sankt Peter am Kammersberg is a village in the province of Styria, which is now called Steiermark . There is a district call Murau - but like Sankt Peter etc, the FHLC doesn't recognise it!

When stuck like this I usually go to Rootsweb and check out the mailing lists and message boards. There is a mailing list - bilingual, not terribly busy - for Austria-Styria - so why not give it a go and subscribe then send a message asking about your grandmother.
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/inde ... TYRIA.html .
There is also a message board for Styria:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.c ... ia/mb.ashx
There is even a GALLER surname message board, though it has hardly ever been used.

That's the on-line stuff. In practical terms, I think you need to find the address of the Town Hall in Sankt Peter am Kammersberg, and write to the ? Registrar seeking a copy of Ludmilla Galler's birth certificate, and even her parents' marriage certificate. You never know, you might even get an answer!
Cheers

Hi Sylvia,

I did try the rootsweb pages a while ago, as well as the Ancestry boards, with not much luck.

I probably will have to write eventually, but with all of the websites being in German, tracing the write people to write to is not easy. A free search site like yours would have been ideal!
